What is the usefulness of bass guitar in rock and roll?

The bass is the thumping sound you hear that complements the beat of the song. Without the bass, the song would feel emptier and less pulsing or rhythmic. It's hard to explain, but listen to a band without a bassist and you will know the minute you hear it.
